A Mom/Dinner preparers Dream Come True!

I dread dinnertime sometimes...I have the things that I like, John has the things he prefers (usually not my favs), there are the things that John is allergic to (ok, he gets a pass for that), the few things that Brady, my 4 yr old, will eat, then, of course, the baby's food! Hectic, right? I know what some say..."don't be a short order cook, just make one thing and whoever eats it eats." But, as a mom/parent, I think a lot of you would agree, that that's not always possible, in order to keep your sanity. Brady was eating so well for a while, but is now pickier these days. I don't want him to go to bed hungry! I'm admittedly a picky eater. John loves everything plain, which I can't stand! See what I mean. But, last night I heard the angels sing! We all sat down at the table for a family meal, at the same time, and ate the same thing...spaghetti & meatballs...even my little Bailey, who still has no teeth at 11 months, gummed a whole bowl of it! It was a dream family dinner! If every night could be so easy!

How is dinnertime in your house?

  1. Growing up in a somewhat large family (I'm the oldest of 4) my mom was NEVER a short order cook. Whatever was placed on the table was what was for dinner, no if's and's or buts about it. If we didn't like it (even if we had never tried it before) we had to try it anyway. If we still didn't like it we were S.O.L. (s#*t out of luck) and would go to bed somewhat hungry. She never starved us, and we never went to bed truly hungry.

Now, being a mom to a 9 year old little boy who is an off & on picky eater, I make stuff that I know we all will eat. There are some things that I re-introduce that he has said that he "doesn't like" and he always eats every last bite, even after complaining that he doesn't like it. I tend to plan the meals that he really doesn't like (upset tummy, etc) for the weekends when he's with his father, and if for some reason he comes home before dinner on Sunday, I re-heat some leftovers from the previous night.

I know my son HATES tacos, but will eat them if he loads it with cheese. I still make them because it's what is for dinner. He has NEVER gone to bed hungry as he knows that the fresh fruit on the table is for him to munch on. I never ever say he can't have anything, unless it's 5 minutes before dinner time and he's complaining that he's "starving."

    Good luck Chris...you'll get there!
