"You have to go NOW?"

Is your child like mine, and always have to pee/poop in the grocery store? My son had impeccable timing recently too! About halfway through the store...cart full...he announces that he has to pee...ok, no big deal...so we make our way to the front of the store from, of course, the very back of the store, leave our cart unattended and I'm sure in someone's way (it's not exactly small...haha!), and go! You parents know that a 4-year-old going to the bathroom is a major production, from being fascinated with the public bathroom to the not being tall enough to reach the sink to wash hands, and just the general slowness of children! HAHA! Fine...he's done...at least there wasn't an accident...we're good to go back to shopping! Twenty minutes or so passes, we're loading up on frozen foods before we wrap up our shopping trip & head to the registers and he whispers..."Mommy, I have to go poop now!" Of course he does...ugh! He couldn't take care of this when he peed earlier? Nope! Plus, now we have a ton of frozen foods in the cart! I asked him if he could wait until we got home, and he shook his head, "no!" I should have known better! So, back we go retracing our steps to the front, now with an overflowing cart, 'cause I hadn't had time to go shopping in like 2 weeks! Successful poop, after the above routine of a 4-year-old, and I'm exhausted, have melting frozen foods & warm milk, but laughing like crazy! That's what you have to do is just laugh...he's too darn cute to do anything else!!! It was too funny!

Do your kids have great timing like mine does?

  1. My son (he's 8) has to go every time we are in the back of Target. No matter what I do, he still has to go when we hit the back section. And of course they are in the front of the store. I even ask him to go when we first walk in to the store, and it's always "I don't have to go"....that is until we get to the back!

  2. My son does not have bad timing, but I did catch on air the question of how old is too old to bring your son in the womens room?

That has 2 parts. My son is 9... and if he has to go, I will send him into the men's room while I wait outside the door. I see who goes in... who comes out... and how long they've been in there.

Now... if I have to go... there is no way I am leaving my 9 year old unattended in the store while I go. So I bring him in and have him stand just inside the door where he won't get hit with it. I have never had anyone question it. And I think most everyone understands that.

  3. I have 4 kids, 3 boys and a girl. My daugther is not at potty training age so no issues with her yet. My boys are the same way, and now it's just second nature to me, I don't even think about it anymore. My oldest when he was younger, 9 or so, I would let him go by himself but tell him not to let anyone touch him or to even talk to anybody, just to pee, wash hands then run out and I would be at the door. When he had to come in the ladies room with me he would just wait by the door inside, just far enough away from the stalls so he didn't feel too silly. Now that he's 12, he knows the rules and HE takes his brothers into the bathroom with him.
It doesn't matter how many times you ask them if they need to go, they never need to go at the same time! My 3 always have to go at different times. Sometimes they all want to go just because the other one is going but then 10 minutes later I find out that atleast one of them didn't actually pee, and now he have to. It's like that everywhere we go. When my 12 year old isn't with me, I bring the other boys in the ladies room because they're only 7 and 4.
